Calculating lower unit gear ratios- how too?

Recommended Posts

Is this the way, other than counting teeth on the graers to figure out gear ratio?

1- engine in gear

2- mark prop with something(I use masking tape) on blade edge at 12:00

3- mark flywheel with something and mark with know good point( i use case seam)

4- start turning flywheel

If prop turns one revolution and flywheel turns 1 1/2 times it's a 1.5:1 lower gear unit.

If prop turns one revolution and flywheel turns 1 3/4 times it's a 1.75:1 lower gear unit

If prop turns one revolution and flywheel turns 2 times it's a 2.00:1 lower gear unit

If prop turns one revolution and flywheel turns approx between 1 1/2 & 1 3/4 times it's a 1.62:1 lower gear unit

Is this correct?
